We’ve all been there before, standing in the produce section of the grocery store, unsure of which fruits or vegetables are the freshest. It seems like each piece of food has different rules in terms of determining freshness. At Executive One Catering, we know a thing or two about fresh fruits and vegetables. Our Dade catering company has put together some top tips for buying fresh produce on your next trip to the supermarket.

Shop Seasonally

There’s a reason that tomatoes look better in December than they do in July. While worldwide farming has made it so we can enjoy ingredients at all times of the year, seasons are still important when shopping for produce. Our Dade catering company suggests sticking to what’s in season when you’re shopping for produce. For example, avocados, corn, and watermelon are all in season during the month of July. Check the Surface

When buying produce, it’s important to inspect the surface of fruits and vegetables. In general, you should make sure that there are no bumps, bruises, or scratches. Even coloration across also indicates a healthy piece of produce.

Test the Softness

For root vegetables such as garlic, onions, or potatoes, pick up the vegetable to see how firm it is. If there are cracks, or if the vegetable is too soft, don’t buy that one. For citrus fruits, you don’t want it to be too firm or it may be dry on the inside.

Follow Your Nose

All fruits and vegetables have a smell, but a strong smell isn’t always a good thing. If the smell is too strong, or if you pick up other strange smells, consider buying another piece of produce. Overripe fruits can have a strong smell.

Shop Locally

When buying produce, our Dade corporate caterers suggest shopping locally. There are many farmer’s markets in the area, along with grocery stores which focus on local produce. Shopping locally helps ensure you’re purchasing the freshest produce.
